Sam has been a parishioner at St. Mary's since 2003. He grew up in the Central Valley on a ranch and then was educated by the Jesuits at the University of San Francisco. He received separate degrees in government and theology. His university days were the beginning of his membership in the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society. He then attended the University of San Francisco School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctorate degree. He is currently the managing partner of the San Jose office of Borton Petrini, LLP, a law firm founded over 100 years ago.
Sam is a member in the William A. Ingram American Inn of Court of San Jose, affiliated with the American Inns of Court. He was also President of the St. Stanislaus School Advisory Board. In addition, he was a special advisor to the Cerebral Palsy Association.
Sam has been a lector at the 6:00 o'clock mass and is now a lector at the 11:15 a.m. mass. He has been a core member of the Equador Ministry/Working Boys Committee for the last two years.
Sam is married to Anita Gildea-Phillips, and they have two sons, Patrick and Sean.
