1860s Early settlers attended Mass at St. Clare Church in Santa Clara.
1870s Jesuit Fathers Edmund Young and Vincent Testa came from Santa Clara to Los Gatos to celebrate Mass in the home of Mr. P. J Mullen. Small wooden church was erected by Santa Clara College on property owned by the college on Santa Cruz Avenue between Main and Bean.
1886 Sacred Heart Novitiate was established on the Wilcox property, one mile southeast of Los Gatos.
1887 Los Gatos became a municipal corporation, August 10.
1894 Electricity comes to town.
1912 The Jesuits, being short of priests, handed the Mission over to the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Archbishop Edward J Hanna elevated the mission to parish status and appointed Rev. Charles R. Baschab, PhD, as first pastor. The parish acquired property at Bean and Tait (370 feet on Bean by 200 feet on Tait) and moved the small hall, previously used as a church, to the corner of the new property where it became the nave of the new church.
1913 First permanent rectory built.
1914 Church was improved with the addition of a front section consisting of a vestibule, baptistry, choir loft, transept and sanctuary with sacristies. Louis T. Lenzen of San Jose was architect and H. Hooper of Los Gatos, contractor. New church building seated 286.
1919 Rev. Patrick J O'Hara appointed pastor.
1925 Rev. William F. Keller appointed pastor.
1928 Sunday school chapel and hall added to church. Modern heating installed for church, hall and rectory at cost of $12,000. Parish grounds beautified with trees, shrubs and flowers. Four Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur came each Sunday to instruct 100 children. Archbishop Hanna blessed the new chapel and confirmed 100 children on July 4.
1934 Rev. Richard J Curtis appointed pastor. Sacred Heart Novitiate, first house of theology for Jesuits in the West built. Named Alma College. Opens with 50 students.
1948 Rev. Lester I. Ehrmann named administrator of parish.
1951 Rev. Peter A. Doherty named pastor.
1954 Groundbreaking for parish school. Parish drive begins to raise $200,000 to construct eight classrooms. Pre-school and school age children in parish number 627. The Most Rev. Hugh A. Donohoe, auxiliary bishop of San Francisco, dedicated new school on October 10. School conducted by Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
1960 School auditorium built.
1961 Drive begins to raise $190,000 to build new church. Mass said in parish hall. Father Doherty dies. Rev. Richard T. Howley becomes sixth pastor. New rectory built.
1962 First Mass celebrated in new church on December 8. Dedication of church by Archbishop Joseph T. McGucken on December 30. Golden Jubilee year of the parish.
1963 Altar consecrated on March 15.
1972 Associate pastor Rev. Henri Tomei, 64, stabbed to death in the church. Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima erected in the church on the spot of Father's death.
1976 Parish hall converted to gymnasium.
1981 Father Howley retires. Rev. Arthur Hofmann appointed pastor. Creation of Diocese of San Jose.
1987 Parish drive begins to raise $1,000,000 to finance new pastoral center for parish. (Total cost $1,450,000) June 14: Dedication of new facilities by Bishop Pierre DuMaine and celebration of 75th anniversary of parish and 25th of church dedication.
